Illinois Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Fri, 18 Jul 2008 17:23:01 PDT-

In the wake of the NFL draft, there are two ways to view the way the league's 32 teams all but ignored the available talent from Illinois' Rose Bowl squad.

Running back Rashard Mendenhall, who went No. 23 overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers, was the only Illini who heard his name called. Considering 10 seniors started the Rose Bowl for Illinois—and Mendenhall was an early-entry junior—that suggests the Big Ten's Offensive Player of the Year was far more important to the team than anyone can measure. That's one theory.

The other? Illinois welcomes back quite a bit more talent than it's being given credit for having.

Though fourth-year coach Ron Zook constantly expresses his gratitude to his players who have moved on, consider him firmly in the "quite a...

Indiana Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Fri, 18 Jul 2008 17:23:01 PDT-

The Hoosiers didn't answer as many questions as they might have liked in the spring. But with the reinstatement of quarterback Kellen Lewis, who missed the entire spring with his mysterious suspension and was gone for a total of four months, IU can now fill in the blanks with fall drills approaching.

Indiana was missing other key contributors this spring in receiver Andrew Means and tailback Marcus Thigpen. Means was off playing baseball and Thigpen running track. It left the Hoosiers thin at every key position on an offensive unit that ranked third in the Big Ten at 31.7 points per game.

While the Hoosiers have made changes to round out the offense, Lewis is the key cog. If he's back to stay—the reason for his suspension remains undisclosed—the Hoosiers'...

Indiana QB Lewis reinstated (AP)
Mon, 07 Jul 2008 16:19:12 PDT-Indiana quarterback Kellen Lewis was reinstated to the team Monday after being suspended for about four months. The school never explained why Lewis was suspended in March, but coach Bill Lynch said his star player did what was necessary to return to the team. "Kellen has worked very hard and reached all the benchmarks we set for him," Lynch said in a release.

Iowa Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Fri, 18 Jul 2008 17:23:01 PDT-

Incumbent Iowa quarterback Jake Christensen may lack job security, but the junior left-hander has no shortage of self-confidence.

"In my mind, there's no question. I don't think you can ever doubt yourself or have any doubt in your abilities," he said. "In my mind, I'm the guy, but that's not up to me. I can only take care of my job."

That job appears to be in minor jeopardy and won't be settled until the team reconvenes later this summer, according to head coach Kirk Ferentz.

Christensen passed for 2,269 yards, 17 touchdowns and just six interceptions last year, but completed only 53.5 percent of his throws and struggled to avoid the rush. Iowa was last in the Big Ten in both scoring (18.5 points per game) and total offense (316.3 yards per game).

Michigan Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Fri, 18 Jul 2008 17:23:01 PDT-

The new coach has been embroiled in controversy since his first day on campus. Then Rich Rodriguez swung and missed on top recruit Terrelle Pryor, who was supposed to be the star quarterback who would lead the Wolverines' new spread option.

On top of all that, one of the few returning starters, offensive lineman Justin Boren, defected for Ohio State, citing the "erosion of family values" within the program, a direct shot at Rodriguez and his new staff. Right now, football season can't arrive fast enough.

When it does, it will likely be a growing season for the Wolverines, who are undergoing a major overhaul as Rodriguez brings widespread change to a program rich in tradition.

Michigan State Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Fri, 18 Jul 2008 17:23:01 PDT-

Michigan State was closer to being an elite team than its 7-5 record would indicate. The Spartans qualified for a bowl game for the first time in four seasons and lost all five games by a touchdown or less under first-year coach Mark Dantonio.

That leaves the program cautiously optimistic entering 2008. Michigan State is a program that traditionally seems to fall apart while on the verge of greatness. Dantonio has gone well out of his way to adjust attitudes in a short time.

For the Spartans to thrive, they must successfully repair both the offensive and defensive line, replace the top two pass catchers from last season and keep Javon Ringer healthy, something he has struggled to do during his time in East Lansing.

Minnesota Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Fri, 18 Jul 2008 17:23:01 PDT-

Minnesota coach Tim Brewster said this spring practice was the most physical he's ever been associated with, but it remains to be seen if that will lead to better results on the field.

The Gophers have only one way to go after finishing 1-11 last season, including 0-8 in the Big Ten. Brewster insists his team made progress this spring. But the team again will rely heavily on a large number of incoming freshmen and junior college transfers, and many are not on campus yet.

The Gophers installed a new defense under first-year coordinator Ted Roof and worked extensively on tackling after finishing last nationally in total defense. The defense also found a leader in free safety Tramaine Brock, a junior college transfer who made a big impression this spring with his speed,...

Northwestern Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Fri, 18 Jul 2008 17:23:01 PDT-

If you like the status quo, then Northwestern's spring camp wasn't the place to be.

After a frustrating 6-6 season where the Wildcats squandered fourth-quarter leads against Purdue and Iowa—and somehow lost a home game to Duke—Pat Fitzgerald shook things up during the offseason.

He brought in Bowling Green's Mick McCall as offensive coordinator—and McCall convinced Fitzgerald to go back to the no-huddle attack that Northwestern used for several years under Randy Walker.

He brought in Wisconsin's Mike Hankwitz as defensive coordinator—and Hankwitz installed an attacking 4-3 defense that's supposed to bring more big plays in 2008.

The new coordinators' arrivals meant Northwestern spent plenty of spring ball learning new systems and...

Penn State Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Fri, 18 Jul 2008 17:23:01 PDT-

Joe Paterno entered his 43rd spring as Penn State's head coach with a big question mark at quarterback and even more questions about his contract. The Nittany Lions exited the spring with both questions unanswered.

Paterno's contract, which expires at the end of 2008, will not be renewed, and his coaching status will be determined on a season-by-season basis. He said his focus is on the '08 season, which could be a big one if a few things fall into place for Penn State.

Whether junior Daryll Clark or sophomore Pat Devlin emerges as the starter, the Nittany Lions will need consistent quarterback play to make an offense filled with talent but lacking a true superstar go. Tailbacks Evan Royster and Stephfon Green, wide receivers Deon Butler, Jordan Norwood and Derrick...

Paterno heads class being honored at hall of fame (AP)
Fri, 18 Jul 2008 15:13:01 PDT-

In this Nov. 3, 2007 file photo, Penn State coach Joe Paterno gives a thumbs-up as he walks off the field after Penn State defeated Purdue 26-19 in a football game in State College, Pa.. Paterno, 81, entering his 43rd season as head coach at Penn State, has shown through the years he knows more about maneuvering through the coaching waters than just about everybody, which is why he will be enshrined with 19 others into the College Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, July 20, 2008.

Joe Paterno has his own take on Mark Twain's "Life on the Mississippi" and the challenge a riverboat captain faces trying to navigate the waters of a mighty river. For Paterno, it's a little bit like coaching college football. "He wrote that a captain has to learn more than anybody should ever have to learn, and then the next day he's got to learn it in a different way.

A win for Penn St. QB Clark, though not QB job (AP)
Mon, 14 Jul 2008 15:09:53 PDT-Daryll Clark did some heavy lifting to win his first competition of the year, though it had nothing to do with the starting quarterback job at Penn State. Not surprisingly, much of the talk before Clark and three of his Nittany Lion teammates won a charity strength and conditioning contest this past weekend was about football.

Familiar name at Penn State: Wisniewski at guard (AP)
Sat, 12 Jul 2008 01:07:49 PDT-Having a Wisniewski at guard for Penn State is a familiar sound for Nittany Lions fans. Sophomore Stefen Wisniewski hopes he can be just as good as his uncle, Steve, a college standout in the 1980s who went on to a distinguished career in the NFL. The younger Wisniewski knows it's going to take some work, though.

Purdue Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Fri, 18 Jul 2008 17:23:01 PDT-

The succession plan is in place. Joe Tiller is set to begin his final season in West Lafayette and Danny Hope has already been brought on staff as his successor to ease any gap in recruiting. For the man who turned around Purdue football, though, Tiller's final season could be a struggle.

Purdue returns six starters on each side of the ball and is without a number of playmakers on offense. That's never a good sign for a team built on the spread and its ability to make big plays.

This spring was a struggle just to stay healthy. A rash of minor, nagging injuries (none considered serious) left the coaches to mix and match lineups throughout the spring. By the time it was over, Tiller barely had any semblance of a depth chart heading into the fall.

"I don't view...

Wisconsin Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Fri, 18 Jul 2008 17:23:01 PDT-

There's always something a little extra special about spring ball when there's a smoldering battle at quarterback. But it's not as special when the competitors fail to assert themselves and force the battle to continue in August.

That's how things will unfold at Wisconsin as neither senior Allan Evridge nor junior Dustin Scherer performed so well that they made head coach Bret Bielema pull the trigger after the Red-White game on April 19.

"We will approach it somewhat similar to what we did a year ago," Bielema said in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Get into fall camp, see where guys are at, see who is consistent and name a starter probably two weeks out from the (Aug. 30 opener vs.
